I hear many foreigners visit to convenience stores during their stay in Japan.
When I travel abroad, one of my favorite things to do is to shop at the local convenience stores.
So, I would like to share with you the characteristics of each from a Japanese point of view!
Seven-Eleven
The largest number of convenience stores in Japan
Seven-Eleven is one of Japan’s leading convenience stores. It’s number of stores is the largest in Japan. You can find another Seven-Eleven if you walk 5 minuites! (This is totally my personal point of view) It can be said that Seven-Eleven is the convenience store that Japanese people use the most. When in doubt, use Seven-Eleven for sure!
Diverse product lineup
When you think of convenience stores, you probably have a strong image of food products. However, there is more than just food. Seven-Eleven also have a variety of miscellaneous goods such as daily necessities and stationery. If you forgot something during your stay in Japan, you may be able to find it at a Seven-Eleven!
Services such as ATMs and copy machines
At Seven-Eleven, you can also use ATMs, copy machine and printers. Some other stores have foreign currency exchange machine! (Note that there are only available at some stores in the Tokyo metropolitan area)
Lawson
Popular Sweets Products
Lawson is famous for its delicious sweet products.
In particular, the premium roll cake became a big hit in Japan, with many people clamoring to buy it.
Lawson also has its own brand of sweets under the name “Uchicafe.
If you are in doubt about what to have for dessert after dinner, Lawson is the place to go.

At FamilyMart, Famichiki is especially famous and highly recommended. (The author loves to eat Famichiki at Christmas)
